In a special interview given to Aanmeegaglitz YouTube channel, renowned astrologer Bharathi Sridhar spoke in detail about the significance of Thai Amavasai 2025, the method of performing Tharpanam, the method of observing Viratham, the time for offering Padaiyal, and who should perform Tharpanam.
Thai Amavasai is considered a very auspicious day for Pitrus (ancestors). It is the first Amavasai that comes during the Utharayana Punya Kalam. It is believed that by performing Pitru Karyam on this day, when the Sun and Moon unite in the Makara Rasi, sins will not be carried over to future generations.
Who should perform Tharpanam?
Only men who have lost their fathers should perform Tharpanam. Those who have lost their mothers need not perform Tharpanam. Padaiyal can be offered to those who have met with untimely deaths in the family.
How to observe Viratham?
It is good to avoid non-vegetarian food on Amavasai. Easily digestible food should be consumed. Tubers and certain vegetables can be avoided. Foods like pasi paruppu (moong dal) can be included in the diet.
Daanam and other rituals:
On Amavasai, things like agathi keerai, raw rice, and jaggery can be donated to cows. Offering food to crows is one of the important rituals. The crow is considered an aspect of the Pitrus.
Temple Worship:
It is best to visit and worship at temples on Amavasai. This will bring the blessings of both the deities and the Pitrus.
Special Significance of Thai Amavasai 2025:
In 2025, the Moon transits in the Thiruvona Nakshatram on Thai Amavasai. Therefore, visiting and worshipping Vishnu temples, including Tirupati Ezhumalaiyan, is especially auspicious.
Time for performing Parikaram:
It is good to perform Parikarams and deity worship between 9 am and 10 am in the morning. Pitru Karyams can be done between 11 am and 12 pm.
